Langkawi, Malaysia 8-11 November 2008

Langkawi was a really nice change from Thailand and Tamalang Harbour was really pretty. I didn’t put a map in as Langkawi is on the same map as Ko Lipe in the last posting.

We hadn’t booked anywhere to stay… again… (every time we do this I swear it’s the last time but it never is) and we ended up staying on Patang Beach. We weren’t sure if we could judge Malaysian food by that we ate here, but it was fantastic nonetheless and on a par with Thailand, on both price and taste.

Patang had a few OK beaches but jellyfish were hovering so we didn’t swim. I thought that the below were stationary flagpoles in the water, then realised they were moving.

The below is a chap swimming with two flags. He looked like he was struggling a bit so I didn’t ask him but we guess he must have had a dare or challenge or something. Can’t see anyone swimming with flags for a hobby!

Beer was super expensive so after Euan had the bright idea of buying some gin, we switched to the harder stuff. He had a less bright idea of letting me pour. It was lovely having a few G&Ts on the beach but the next morning was another story!

There were bars on the beach but most places were quiet as it’s the end of the rainy season but when it rains (which was often during the time we were there), it really rains.

We hired a scooter for a day and did about 100km around the island in between downpours but we don’t think Langkawi is the most picturesque island we’ve been on. To be fair though, we didn’t venture far off the roads as it really was wet.

Island hopping has to be the best way to travel! Next stop is Georgetown on Penang Island, 2 ½ hours from Langkawi.
