Bariloche, Argentina 14-16 January 2009

Euan has travelled in these parts previously and remembers the scenery to be stunning between Puerto Varas and Bariloche although he took a (now expensive) combination of bus and boat. The same trip is now a whopping US$280 so the ~$20 bus trip was far more appealing.

The trip has to be the most scenic bus trip I’ve done in my life and it was a thoroughly pleasant way to spend seven hours. There are some wonderful mountains in the area. This is Volcan Osorno that was in view for about the first three hours of the journey as we drove around it

and just down the road is Cerro Puntiagudo.

This is Bariloche, perched on the edge of Lake Nahuel Huapl with mountains behind.

Check out these mountains! I’ve never seen anything like it. They reminded me of an erratic heart rate graph.

We were surprised and horrified at how expensive Bariloche was and struggled to find accommodation under £20 each per night. A rude shock for the wallets and not a good incentive to stay a long period of time. We did however, find a self-catering apartment and managed to eat incredible steak for a fraction of the price it would cost anywhere else. I was actually preparing dinner when I looked out the window and saw the sky

I’ve never seen clouds like these before

It didn’t take long for them to break up but the show was worth watching and all for free.

It was really windy while we were there and I was struggling to stand still in this photo

I found Bariloche a weird kind of place and said to Euan that had someone plonked me here and not told me where I was in the world I would have guessed somewhere in Europe, like Austria. There was some weird architecture and even St Bernard dogs in the Town Square.

We headed back the same way, across the border into Chile again and on to Valdivia, the nicest place we’d stopped at in Chile thus far.
